Carrier service types and ship via mapping

Carrier service types and ship via mapping

Introduction

A carrier service type is a method of shipping offered by parcel or freight carriers to transport goods – Ground Shipping, Next Day Air Shipping, and Expedited Freight Shipping are all examples of service types.

Whether rate shopping or generating a tracking number, SureShip™ must be able to tell the carrier’s electronic database which shipping service type to use, including any additional shipping options that may apply, in order to retrieve appropriate transportation costs.

This article describes the forms used to review the service types that your SureShip™ module has access to, and map them to a set of default shipping options.

Ship Via Codes

The Ship Via Codes form is used to set up new ship via methods and assign them an internal CloudSuite™ Industrial identification code.

Ship via codes are required for each carrier service type to be used for parcel or freight shipping.
More than one ship via code may be set up for the same carrier service type to predefine unique sets of default shipping options. See the sections below for additional information.

SureShip Carrier Service Types

The SureShip Carrier Service Types form is used to associate API-enabled carriers with applicable service types.

Carrier Service Code is a standardized code used by the carrier’s computer system to classify a type of shipping service. Because carriers determine their own formats, their service codes may not be interchangeable with other carriers – for example, the code for FedEx Ground® shipping is “FEDEX_GROUND”, while the code for UPS Ground® shipping is “03”.

The Freight checkbox designates a service type that is specifically used for freight shipments.

The Returnable checkbox designates service types that can be used to generate return labels.

The Default Service Option checkbox designates which service type to use by default for return shipments processed with a carrier. For example, if a shipment is originally processed using a more expensive service type, your company may wish to use a less expensive service type for return shipments.

Select only one default service option per carrier.
Please contact your AIT Business Services account representative to request a new carrier service type to be added.

SureShip Ship Via Mapping

The SureShip Ship Via Mapping form is used to associate a carrier-standard Service Type with a specific internal Ship Via (CloudSuite™ Industrial identification code found on the Ship Via Codes form) for API-enabled carriers, and set default shipping options.

The default shipping options set here will be automatically inherited by any order that uses that ship via code, but may be overridden as necessary.
