A package type is a type of receptacle used by parcel or freight carriers to transport goods – pallets, drums, boxes, envelopes are all examples of package types. Carrier package types are package types that fall under carrier-standard criteria.
Whether rate shopping or generating a tracking number, SureShip™ must be able to tell the carrier’s electronic database which package types will be used for shipment. Depending on the type of shipping service to be used on a shipment, you may be limited to carrier-standard packaging only.
This article describes the forms used to set up package types and review the carrier-standard package types that your SureShip™ module has access to.
The Package Types form is used to set up new parcel and freight packaging types, define their default weights and dimensions, and assign them an internal CloudSuite™ Industrial identification code.
The SureShip Carrier Package Types form is used to associate carrier-standard package types with a specific internal SL Package Type (CloudSuite™ Industrial identification code found on the Package Types form) for API-enabled carriers.
A Carrier Package Type is a standardized code used by the carrier’s computer system to classify a type of packaging receptacle. Because carriers determine their own formats, their package codes may not be interchangeable with other carriers – for example, the code for a pallet is “PALLET” for FedEx Freight® and “PT” for Estes Express Lines®.
The Freight checkbox designates a packaging type that is specifically used for freight shipments.
